. >> miguel marquez with the latest for us from los angeles. thank you. >>> fbi investigators are expected in libya today to investigate the attacks on the u.s. embassy. the u.s. ambassador and three other americans were killed. cnn intelligence correspondent suzanne kelly is following the developments for us from washington. what did the u.s. intelligence agencies know and when did they know it? >> it's great to look back now in retrospect and take a look at soom some of the clues that were there. one of the things they knew was that these groups were present in benghazi, they were well-organized, they have an infrastructure to them. they also knew of the presence of al qaeda sympathizers in the area, pockets of sympathizers. they also knew -- and we found this out from an intelligence source, there was an intelligence cable 48 hours before this attack took place that warned about the presence of this anti-muslim film on the internet. not only that, but that they had seen an up tick in the traffic visiting that site, that obviously this is a sign that this is gaining more popularity. cnn

in on the consulate attackers. >> reporter: a team of fbi investigators has arrived here in benghazi. they're gogt to now begin sifting through the rebel and ashes at the u.s. consulate to identify any clues or evidence that may help them in identifying who is behind the attack that killed the u.s. ambassador and three other americans. we also understand that the libyan government for their part is cooperating with the u.s. intelligence agencies and other agencies involved in the investigation. the libyan government believes that this was a preplanned attack, that this was not a spontaneous outburst of violence as some have suggested. so far they have four individuals in their custody. they say several more are under surveillance. they are trying to see whether these individuals have any important information that can benefit the american investigation. meanwhile, u.s. intelligence assets including unmanned aerial drones are keeping an eye above the skies of benghazi and eavesdropping on the people below to see if there's any communication that could also shed some light onto tuesday's attack. the

morning, sam. we understand that a team of fbi agents has arrived in benghazi and they have begun their investigation to try to determine who was responsible for the attack on the u.s. consulate that killed ambassador stevens and three other americans. we know that they will be sifting through the rubble and ashes at the u.s. consulate and identifying individuals who may have played a role in that assault. we also understand that u.s. intelligence agent sits have deployed their assets across the country to try to pick up any intelligence that can help in that search. all indications right now according to libyan officials is this is a pre-planned attack. they have identified a few individuals. four are in custody of the libyan government. they believe these individuals may have some information that may be of value as to who is responsible for the attack. they also say they have several others under the libyan government surveillance. right now though all fingers are pointing to at least one militant group here that is closely affiliated with or at least inspired by al qaeda. that
